Behind the scenes of LA’s hottest Celebrity DJ, Marta Thiessen AKA GRLSKOUT

Can you share a bit about your journey as a DJ and how you got started in the music industry?

I actually played keyboards in a band when I was 19 and from there it led to DJing, then producing music and here I am now getting to do what I love for a living.

How would you describe your unique style and approach to DJing?

Honestly I am constantly growing as an artist and always stimulated by new music, traveling or creating in my studio. I don’t really like to pin myself to one genre or style because I play so many different shows. My gigs range from festivals, big nightclubs, all the way to celebrity events, and luxury corporate events. I DJ a lot of really cool stuff which makes me love what I do so much and keeps it fun and exciting. The club world, celebrity world and corporate world are all very different worlds to DJ in.

How are they different and what do you like about them?

The club world and festivals I get to play for thousands of people where its high energy and I get to play my original music as an artist. It’s an absolute rush to play the music you created and watch thousands of people dance to it. The celebrity and corporate world is a totally different experience. I get to play a blend of whatever the client requests and my music while curating and incorporating my spin on it. Also playing for high profile events is always exciting. I get to work with some really amazing people and play in some incredible settings and places on this journey that create memorable experiences.

What are some of your most recent memorable gigs that you played?

I’m a resident DJ for a lot of high end car brands like Lamborghini, Bentley and McLaren just to name a few. So I get to play Pebble Beach Car Week every summer, which is mind blowing. Especially if you’re a car lover. I also just recently DJ’d at Formula 1 in Austin Texas for Alfa Romeos Team. That was an incredible experience! Also DJ’d for Louis Vuitton & Versace recently which was lovely cause I love both brands.

Wow that’s very impressive! How about clubs & festivals?

As for clubs I am a resident DJ for all the Insomniac Nightclubs in Southern California and just played main stage at Nocturnal Wonderland & Audiotistic Festival in San Diego. I love being in the Insomniac family. They are amazing to their artists and I love playing all their venues and festivals.

If you had to pick one artist that shaped or inspired your career from a young age who would it be?

Im a huge fan of Nirvana. I think Kurt Cobain is as raw as it gets and that’s how music should be. Now a days everyone is trying so hard to be whatever is popular in the moment, impressing labels, perfecting vocals and making everything so perfect. What I loved about Kurt Cobain was he would mess up live and embrace it and make it art and that’s beautiful to me. To see the rawness in an artist is super inspiring and unique to me.
