Mats van Biljouw knows what it means to move quickly.

Three years ago, the 23-year-old DJ and producer was making music from his bedroom in Horst, Limburg, and sharing his first tracks with friends. Today, he performs under the name KLOFAMA at major international stages, travels constantly and plays to audiences of thousands. In a short period of time, he has become one of the prominent artists of a new hardtechno generation.

But while the outside world sees an artist on the rise, Mats is still learning how to live with the speed of that success.

The short documentary I AM: KLOFAMA, produced by CULT., follows Van Biljouw during a year in which his career expands at an extraordinary rate. Directed by Sten Hoeijmakers of CULT. Productions, the film moves between the public world of KLOFAMA and the private life of Mats—the person behind the name.

A life defined by movement

The documentary begins in motion. Airports, hotel rooms, backstage areas and international venues have become part of Mats’ daily reality. Each performance brings a new location, a new crowd and another reminder of how far his career has travelled from its beginnings in Horst.

On stage, KLOFAMA is surrounded by intensity. The music is loud, the crowds are large and the expectations continue to grow. His performances place him at the centre of a rapidly developing hardtechno scene, one that has reached audiences across national borders.

But the film also makes room for stillness. Between performances, Mats returns to his childhood home and reconnects with family and friends who knew him before the artist name became widely recognised. In Horst, the scale of his career is temporarily reduced to something more familiar.

That contrast is central to the documentary. KLOFAMA belongs to an international world of clubs, festivals and all-night-long shows. Mats remains connected to the town where he grew up and the people who knew him first.

The person behind the name

The central question of I AM: KLOFAMA is simple: who is Mats when the lights go out?

The film looks at what happens when a public identity develops faster than a person can adapt to it. As more people recognise KLOFAMA, the distance between the artist and the individual behind the name becomes increasingly important.

How do you stay authentic when audiences know a version of you shaped by the stage? What does international recognition mean when you still return home to your parents? And how do you balance ambition with the pressure created by constant travel, performance and public attention?

These questions are explored through intimate, everyday moments. Mats sits at the kitchen table, spends time with friends from before his breakthrough and drives through his hometown. Away from the crowd, there is space for conversations that reveal doubt, loneliness and fatigue—but also relief and pride.

The documentary does not present these emotions as contradictions. They are part of the same experience. Success can be exciting and overwhelming at the same time; a dream can become demanding once it turns into a full-time reality.

A breakthrough shaped by a changing industry

KLOFAMA’s rise also reflects the way artists now reach an audience. Digital platforms and social media have shortened the distance between a bedroom producer and an international fan base. A distinctive sound can travel quickly, allowing a new generation of artists to build momentum outside the traditional routes of the music industry.

Van Biljouw’s career illustrates that development. Within a few years, he has moved from playing early tracks to friends in Horst to performing at major hardtechno and electronic music platforms, including Blackworks, Verknipt, Rotterdam Rave and Teletech. He has also appeared at the Johan Cruijff ArenA.

His growing audience is further demonstrated by multiple sold-out all-night-long shows in the Netherlands and abroad over the past two years. These performances show that KLOFAMA has developed from an emerging talent into an artist capable of attracting large international audiences independently.

Yet the speed of that progression is also what makes his story compelling. Mats has had to adapt to a life that has expanded faster than expected, while maintaining the personal connections that existed before his success.

Keeping both feet on the ground

For I AM: KLOFAMA, the journey is as important as the destination. The documentary captures an artist at a moment of transition: no longer an unknown producer, but not yet removed from the person he was before the breakthrough.

That tension gives the film a broader relevance. The story is rooted in hardtechno, but its themes reach anyone who has experienced sudden change, public expectation or the challenge of growing into a new version of themselves.

KLOFAMA’s career continues to accelerate. At the same time, Mats remains connected to his origins—a reminder that behind every stage name is a person still trying to find balance between ambition, success and home.

I AM: KLOFAMA is currently in production and is expected to premiere in mid-2027.
