October 9 Marks the Arrival of “Armenian Rhapsody,” a Cinematic Collaboration Between BiXX and Natalie Gioia

BiXX and Natalie Gioia Explore Armenian Musical Traditions Through the Expansive Sound of “Armenian Rhapsody”

Drawing on the distinctive sound of the Armenian duduk and the influence of Yanni’s “Prelude,” BiXX and Natalie Gioia deliver an ambitious collaboration that combines orchestral composition with uplifting trance.

American trance DJ and producer BiXX reunites with vocalist, composer, and pianist Natalie Gioia for “Armenian Rhapsody,” released October 9, 2026. The production traces its origins to a performance of Yanni’s “Prelude” that BiXX attended at the Acropolis many years ago. Among the musical elements that captured his attention was the Armenian duduk, whose expressive sound remained a source of inspiration long after the concert. Having wanted to introduce the instrument into his own music for years, BiXX eventually found an opportunity to develop that idea into an original collaboration with Gioia.

The Armenian Duduk Behind the Inspiration

“The original idea for this track came from Yanni’s track, ‘Prelude,’” BiXX explains. “It features one of the most beautiful sounding instruments in the world, the Armenian duduk.”

The influence of “Prelude” had already appeared in BiXX’s performances before the creation of “Armenian Rhapsody.” He previously incorporated the composition into a custom introduction for a performance at Lumi, but the new release offered an opportunity to explore its musical qualities within a production of his own. His initial concept centered on a breakdown reminiscent of “Prelude,” giving the duduk a substantial role in the arrangement.

As the production progressed, however, the instrument presented an unexpected challenge. Its powerful character frequently competed with Gioia’s vocals, making it difficult for the two elements to coexist without diminishing their individual impact. BiXX ultimately reconsidered the arrangement, reducing the duduk’s intensity and positioning its phrases between the vocal sections rather than allowing the sounds to overlap.

“What is wonderful about trance is we can bring in all kinds of native instrument sounds and concepts into the breakdown to make the track more unique and epic,” he says.

How Natalie Gioia Reshaped the Composition

Gioia’s contribution introduced an entirely different dimension to the original concept. Working alongside an orchestral specialist, she developed an extensive new breakdown that moved beyond the arrangement BiXX had initially envisioned. She composed the melody and chord progression, created and performed the vocal parts, and studied Armenian to incorporate lyrics sung in the language.

The composition’s length became one of its most defining characteristics. Gioia delivered a breakdown more than twice as long as what BiXX already considered an extended section, raising questions about how the material could function within a conventional trance production. Although immediately impressed by the musical result, he initially struggled to determine how the arrangement could be accommodated within the expectations of live performances and record labels.

“Natalie surprised me,” BiXX says. “When she first sent it to me, I was blown away, but I did not know what to do with it. The breakdown was so long—too long to play live and too long for most trance tracks and labels.”

Instead of reducing the composition to a more familiar format, BiXX chose to reconsider the structure surrounding it.

“I quickly got my mind out of the negative thinking mode. Why not let Natalie be Natalie and build around this beautiful masterpiece?”

The decision allowed Gioia’s orchestral work to remain intact while BiXX adapted the remaining production around its length and musical development. The Armenian duduk became a more restrained presence, complementing the vocal performance and orchestral instrumentation. BiXX describes the finished breakdown as “an orchestral, angelic cinematic experience,” emphasizing its ability to create the emotional atmosphere of a film score. As he explains, “The breakdown is all about triggering emotions and goosebumps.”

An Unconventional Arrangement Becomes a Rhapsody

Despite its title, “Armenian Rhapsody” was not conceived as a rhapsody from the beginning. The concept emerged only after Gioia delivered her extended composition, prompting BiXX to reconsider the creative possibilities of a less conventional musical structure.

One reference that came to mind was Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody,” particularly the story surrounding its unusual length and the initial concerns about its suitability for radio. BiXX recognized a parallel in his own production, where the arrangement’s scale and contrasting sections challenged the expectations generally associated with trance releases. Rather than treating those characteristics as limitations, he began to see them as essential to the record’s identity.

“I knew we needed to break the mold and make this a rhapsody of sorts,” he says. “A freeform musical composition with contrasting moods, melodies and emotional swings. The original idea had nothing to do with a rhapsody concept, but once Natalie did her part, it was my job to honor her brilliant work.”

The completed arrangement follows this approach through several distinct melodic developments. An uplifting three-note riff establishes the opening before the track transitions into its extensive orchestral breakdown. A separate melody emerges during the subsequent buildup and drop, followed by another riff in the final phrase. Eventually, the production returns to the original three-note motif, reconnecting the different sections through a familiar musical idea.

For BiXX, this return provides one of the track’s most satisfying moments, bringing together an arrangement defined by changes in melody, intensity, and atmosphere. “Many different melodies and sounds—the track is like a rhapsody.”

A Creative Partnership Built on Musical Freedom

“Armenian Rhapsody” represents approximately the sixth collaboration between BiXX and Natalie Gioia, reflecting a working relationship that has continued to develop across several releases. BiXX first discovered Gioia through her vocal performance on Alex M.O.R.P.H.’s “The Reason,” before RAM Boon eventually introduced the two artists.

Their creative process has evolved considerably since those early encounters. While BiXX may provide a reference track, an initial demo, or a written explanation of his ideas, he has increasingly favored allowing Gioia to interpret the material independently. Experience has taught him that overly detailed instructions can restrict the musical possibilities she might otherwise explore.

“I give Natalie total creative freedom,” he says. “She makes my ideas much better. I try to be very careful about limiting Natalie’s creative direction in a track. Sometimes demos can box her in too much. My best success with Natalie is to let her do what she does best.”

An earlier example of this approach can be found in their collaboration “Beauty Within.” BiXX conceived the record as a tribute to his late mother, drawing inspiration from her belief in the importance of inner beauty. He shared the personal meaning behind the project with Gioia, who subsequently developed the lyrics and composed the breakdown, translating his original sentiment into a musical arrangement.

That same creative independence played a central role in the development of “Armenian Rhapsody.” Rather than attempting to control the direction of Gioia’s contribution, BiXX embraced the unexpected result and allowed it to influence the finished production.

“We have a style and a process that, in my opinion, makes each new project better than the last,” he says. “Armenian Rhapsody may be my best track to date.”

Expanding the Familiar BiXX Sound

Although “Armenian Rhapsody” introduces an unconventional structure and a broader orchestral approach, its musical foundation remains closely connected to the characteristics that have defined BiXX’s catalogue. Expressive melodies, extended emotional breakdowns, and powerful uplifting drops continue to shape his productions, with the new collaboration allowing those elements to develop on a larger scale.

BiXX also places considerable importance on how a track begins, believing that an engaging introduction is essential to establishing the listener’s experience.

“I hate boring intros,” BiXX says. “So many trance tracks have boring intros. It’s like they don’t want to make the track too good too soon, but then it never gets good. If you start off great and keep getting better, then you have a listening experience.”

Throughout “Armenian Rhapsody,” the opening three-note melody, Gioia’s vocal passages, orchestral arrangement, and energetic drop each contribute a different dimension to the production. BiXX considers all of these elements representative of his musical identity. When asked which passage most closely captures his signature sound, he compares the decision to choosing a favorite child: “All of them. Just differently.”

His established catalogue includes several Beatport Top 10 releases, among them “Marvelous Universe,” “Flight of Life,” “Above the Clouds,” “Yes I Can,” “Purpose,” “After Dark,” and “Trance at the Opera.” He has also achieved Beatport #1 positions with “Still We Rise” and “Victoria.” His music generates more than three million Spotify streams annually, with a reported total of 25 million streams across his catalogue since 2019.

Behind these achievements remains the philosophy that has long informed his artistic direction: music is the vehicle, inspiration is the message.

For BiXX, the ultimate measure of “Armenian Rhapsody” lies in the emotional response it creates rather than the complexity of its arrangement.

“To be honest, I want them to be blown away and put the track on repeat,” he says. “I would hope they experience many emotions throughout the track and forget about life for just a short time. Then come back in a happier, more positive state of mind.”
