Pol Sembrano opens his era with “Anywhere”: lucid synth-pop built to move and feel
Out September 9, 2025 (Independent), “Anywhere” introduces Pol Sembrano’s self-titled album campaign (due February 2026) with rare balance: a clean, elastic groove and a lyric that radiates optimism without soft focus. A Filipino-American, Seattle-based, classically trained pianist turned full-stack producer, Sembrano writes, sings, plays guitars/keys and programs everything himself, then hands it to Canadian heavyweight Casey Lewis (Belvedere, Vixin) at Echo Base Studios for production, mix and master. The result is punchy but breathable—vintage synth warmth with present-day definition.
The arrangement is all intent: rubbery bass, dry drum writing that snaps, pads widening the stereo image, and a topline that sticks because it’s measured, not sugar-bombed. References surface as design cues (Depeche Mode, New Order, Pet Shop Boys, Erasure, CHVRCHES, Blondie, Poolside), never costume. Lyrically, the song treats wanderlust as a practice, not a postcard. “Travel is the best education,” recalls Sembrano, echoing his father’s words; after visiting 57 countries—and surviving the 2004 Thailand tsunami—he sings from presence, not pose.
Press co-signs already map the terrain: We Rave You calls his palette “a sonic odyssey of love, loss and liberation,” The Big Takeover hears music “danceable yet thought-provoking, nostalgic and fresh,” and Grungecake spotlights the fusion of intricate melody, existential writing and polished execution. “Anywhere” distills that promise into four minutes that slip into radio daytime, indie-dance playlists and warm-up DJ slots alike.
